The Virtual Symposium Returns: Let’s Pick A Topic!

The Virtual Symposium Returns: Let’s Pick A Topic!

Our seventh virtual symposium Participants List for The Seventh Virtual Symposium Inspiration What Inspires Us To was the biggest yet, featuring 45 participants. It also marks the first polyglot symposium: Francophones participated for the first time, adding their voices to an international community which features contributors from Greece, Singapore, the United Kingdom, Canada, and that country one encounters when, in the words of John Lennon, one turns left at Greenland. I’m sure I’ve left a country or two out… Ireland, perhaps? Apologies to those I haven’t included here.

We even picked up a few scoops of newbies, thanks largely to previous participants pimping the symposium on their blogs. Thank you, thank you, thank you to everyone who promoted it!

Ready for the eighth? Let’s pick one topic from those listed below, and on the morning of Sunday, May 24 I’ll provide a central landing page which will have links to all contributors’ offerings. No matter which topic we ultimately choose, I hope folks will interpret it as broadly as befits their personalities. Essays, fantasies, poems, image collages, other artwork – the wilder the interpretation, the better!

On the morning of Sunday, May 24, I’ll start a placeholder post, and as participants put their contributions up, I’ll look for their notifications and incorporate links into that central post. Participants are encouraged to note in their posts that they’re part of a communal effort: Doing so allows someone who stumbles on one such blog item to enjoy as many of our pieces as he/she wants… and further strengthens a sense of virtual community.

The only two rules are: A ) Please post as early on the chosen day as possible, to allow for maximum exposure (and, quite frankly, so I’m not glued to my desk all day), and B ) the posts should be entirely original, as opposed to commenting on other posts from the topic. Ideally, posts should be created beforehand, and put on the site on the designated day. (The comments sections, of course, would be fair game!)

A suggestion: Participants may want to refer to either the virtual symposium or the topic itself in their headline. Not a requirement – there are no requirements, save for originality and participation – but a suggestion which will let the wide blog community know what we’re doing. They should definitely let me know, once they’ve posted, that they’ve done so in the comments section on the blog: I get those notifications faster than through the site email system.

And… this is not a contest. No souvenir mugs will be sent, nor ribbons or bling awarded. The idea here is for those interested to, on a single day, offer an interpretation of a single topic for the sheer fun of it.

By all means, encourage other bloggers to participate – and to let me know they’re doing so, either through this post or via email, so on May 24 I can link to their posts. Oh, and consider this permission – nay, encouragement – to the symposium and link back to this post! I’d like to make sure folks interested in participating have the opportunity to do so. , , – and remember, pimping is a great way to influence your topic of choice.

Electioneering is perfectly legal, here… so feel free to leave reactions, persuasive arguments, and snide asides (about topics, but NOT bloggers) in the comments section below.

So what topic will we use for the next virtual symposium? I’ve listed four – I think they’re general enough that, whichever one we end up choosing, most folks should be comfortable offering reactions. One has been generating considerable pre-vote buzz… and naughty person that I am, I was tempted to leave it off and make folks write it in, for the sheer joy of seeing whether a write-in candidate could win. Why didn’t I do so? Because I have no desire to be hung from the highest yardarm in the blogosphere…

At any rate, here are the choices. Feel free to electioneer in the comments, below, for any you find particularly compelling.

Voting for the topic will close at end-day on Monday, May 18.

that vote -- newbie participants are always welcome!

Thank you in advance for your participation! And yes, reading and enjoying counts as participation. Pick that topic!
Recharging/Renewing/Rebooting
Exes (However one wishes to interpret this)
Food
Body Image
Other (Write it in below and lobby for it. Longshot, but… why not?)

I would be quite happy to accept "thinking naked" as a write-in topic... damned if I know what I'd write aboud myself, but I'm rather enjoying mulling it...

Hee hee hee... is "food" destined to be a bridesmaid yet again?

That'll be a cause for chocolate and wine... if not bourbon!

I thought I'd vote 'other' since I have this idea of a different topic, "Doors and/or bridges",
which enables visuals as well as deep thoughts upon linking places and people ...

Yet, for a couple of reasons my voice run for 'food( - I love it and I just don't want exes, no way.
Would exes be the topic I'd scream in sorrow ... and be in pain both to pimp the topic in Blogland french
where two fresh exes are fighting each other or contribute. When the atmosphere is lighter, perhaps,
right now eeeccchhh ! Please, dear fellowbloggers vote for food ! Food is perfect to get French posts !!!

Renewing and recharging is a very good topic for spring... I suspect you'll see it again if it doesn't win this time!

Door and/or bridges, if it doesn't win this time, will definitely go into my list of potential topics... I'm not sure how I'd fit it into my "swinging in the media" focus, but part of the fun of the symposium is wrestling with difficult topics.

As for food... it's been a close runner-up several times... how many French posts -- preferably with illustrations -- do you think we'll get if it wins?

I haven't voted yet, trying to decide between Food and Exes, but Doors and/or Bridges sound very interesting.
Besides, when French talk about food all I can do is drool, not able to utter a word much less write about it.... Aaaah, this decisions...

I can't figure out, really ... there are so many things to be done with food, even eat it !
Yet I'm sure people will find kinkier ways to use it - it's quite easy to figure out some pictures.

This is a juicy set of topics. I hope I can participate in this one before the weather becomes too nice to dwell on the computer. But either way I shall be a reader.

Body Image is a great topic for this medium. I'd love to see what people would write. I know I'd add my two cents.

Please, just call me diggy.

Drooling is a neat start for an activity where you can't utter a word because your mouth is full Vote for 'food' !

For once, all the topics sound great to me- except food. I haven't got a clue what I'd want to say about food. I like eating it. I don't like to play in it or fuck it. There, I said it.
But the Lady wants food and I want her to have what she wants. So, food gets the kzoo vote.

I have a "body image" post I've been mulling for months but it can use a bit more mulling.

Toss up between exes as I've discovered some things lately and male opinion would be nice ... (Is it alpha male syndrome?? Or wanna-be alpha male syndrome from insecure men? The moment another guy wants her: they get all possessive and jealous and "you're mine!!" and try pulling her back in and threatening the new guy under guise of "I care about her, and he's just going to hurt her"). Or Food... though I went with food. Because I was challenged by somebody roughly two years ago regarding food and never quite got around to it.

If you, as a guy, have any opinion on the other.. feel free to reply or PM me or something

Reading IS participating, especially if you leave a comment now and then. We'd love to have you as a contributor as well, though... you could always write your contribution during the off hours and post it early on symposium day...

Body image is too good a topic to give up... I've offered it twice, and may let it rest next time, but I promise you'll see it again.

In the meantime, Kitkat1415 did -- on her own -- a whole week's worth of posts exploring the body image topic. Surf on over to her blog and check them out: They're smart and worthwhile!

Whaddaya mean "for once"?! YOU, sir, suggested one of the topics (Inspiration) which gave me the most trouble!

If you and PD are both going to be regular contributors, we'll need to figure out how to give you two votes. What would have been your choice, as opposed to hers?

Gracie, being a reader as oppose to a writer, does not get a vote. It's a dog's life, I know...
