Community Makes Us Strong: A Mass Media Love Letter

There are a number of amazing bloggers on this site – talented writers, folks who scour the Internet looking for choice tidbits to share, and people who get more naked through the expression of ideas and sentiments than they could by posting a thousand gynecological-based pictures – although there is nothing wrong with gynecological-based pictures, for those wishing to post 'em.

Between shared activities and general commenting, an informal, yet very real community of bloggers has arisen. As far as I’ve seen, this community is welcoming of newbies, affectionate toward its members, and supportive of those in need. Watching new people become part of it, and seeing the relationships that grow as they participate, is one of the great joys of blogging here.

Like any community, this blogosphere has its share of bad elements who range from the genuinely disturbed to those emboldened to infantile behavior through their anonymity. Sometimes these folks pick on people who can not only take it, but can give it back in spades – both because of their own internal strength, as well as the strength added by their friends.

For newbie bloggers, especially those in vulnerable straits, however, this strength may be temporarily lacking. And bad elements can have the innate ability to find these weaker bloggers and, for whatever sad reasons, get their jollies by picking on ‘em.

There’s been a recent rise of bullying within the community, including a few episodes so vicious that bloggers have considered leaving it. Some have, some haven’t.

The good news is that other bloggers are rejecting this trend. The blogger [blog petitandnaughty] calls out some of these bullies in her post How dare they, among others. That post will serve as a clearinghouse for cases of blog abuse, as well as a general catchall for thoughts on the issue. Click, read, and contribute.

There are others of us joined to combat this trend. The blogger [blog _Lady_X_] has written several items of late about this phenomenon. And kzoopair and KItkat1415, two more individuals I would want in my corner any day of the week, have made it clear that in our community, amid our participants, this type of behavior will not stand.

To my fellow bloggers, blog followers, casual readers, symposium participants, and anyone else who happens to stumble across this post: Add your voice. Not just today, but every day when you see bullying here going on. Add it publicly in support of bloggers who are attacked. Add it in the form of reminders that “ban this user” buttons on this site work quite nicely. Add it privately, in the form of personal encouraging notes to people who seem as though they could use ‘em. And add it with humor… because there are two things a bully truly hates: Being ignored, and being laughed at.

It’s our blogosphere. Step in and keep it fun.

We could never lose to the extent that they've already lost. They're picking on people they've never met on an online forum, for cryin' out loud. Doing so isn't going to make them friends, garner admiration for themselves, or get them laid.

What, exactly, could they possibly win?

Yanno - people forget. There's a block button.

If someone's an asshole on your blog, to you are anyone else. Hit the block button. And they're gone.

There are no First Amendment rights around here to be an asshole ON OTHER PEOPLE'S BLOGS. If someone's leaving nasty comments, you don't have to tolerate it.

If they're writing about other people in a way that is threatening, identifies them, or violates the site's "Terms of Use" ... then click the report button.

I've had many successes in the past getting some pretty nasty people banned from the site. It's not difficult to do if the behavior violates the "Terms of Use."

It's a fair point... and one that can work if enough people do it. Falls under the heading of not feeding the trolls.

But words can hurt... even deleted and in the heat of the moment it's sometimes hard not to want to strike back, or try to have the last word... or even try to win the aggressor over.

Your recommended actions work if you're coming from a point of strength and control. But as I mentioned above, sometimes these folks can figure out the weaker of the blogosphere to visit their questionable attention on...

The most important point we're trying to get across here is that people on this site don't have to put up with this crap, whether they choose to use the block button or delete buttons, or however else they elect... and they have some good people supporting 'em.

The really bold one is petitandnaughty: Check out her post, which I reference in my piece, above. Lady X and kzoopair have, along with her, spearheaded the bullying awareness project: I'm just lending my voice to a much needed message.

Glad you're back wtih us: Looking forward to reading what you write!

Thank you for writing this. You and I, as writers off of AF*F know that it is the anonymity that encourages these asswaffles, sometimes. Normally, I just ignore. But he last time this happened I did something unusual- I engaged in a weird way. Never negate the power of being weird. First, I responded to the comment and told them they were not being understandable in what was supposed to be an insult. Then I pulled their sentence apart and tried to decipher what kind of insult they actually were aiming for. Then I went on their profile, meaning only to leave a personal message saying that I welcome dissenting views but not insulting ones. Basically I called them out for being rude. But... I accidentally left it on one of their profile photos, making it trend. People saw my "correction" and must have found some worth to it because more comments were put after mine (all of which were deleted by the shit-fer-brains). I then write a somewhT conciliatory private message telling him to delete my remark from his photo and telling him that there enough women on AF*F who hated him and that they were telling others, so he needed to stop.

I have not heard from him on my blog now for some time but I am not surprised that they get their kicks from being mean to others on other people's blogs. With so much negativity in the world, why add to it?

After that? How about something on what to say to someone who has been targeted?

Look at you, goin' all kung fu on the troll! Add this to AntiquePearl's guide on practical steps to take when confronting trolls! Love it!

Yeah, picking apart a troll's use of the English language can cut said troll off at the knees... and then you added the profile comment, which I'm surprised wasn't deleted...

Hell's bells, people... I read great stuff like this and it's almost enough to make me feel sorry for the trolls...

Almost.

I agree we have had some awesome bloggers on here that I have on my watchers list now. I truly enjoying reading the different styles of blogs. They do say you can learn something each and everyday on here.. Well you can..
Before when I was on this site in blogland and one reason I left was because of the trolls.. I did stand up to them and clearly found out not too many were around to support me at all. Yes I report them to Senior Sizzle but they didn't nothing. Now I am staying as far away from the drama. Sorry I will not get engage again. It is wonderful to see others helping others out on this site. Something that wasn't happening before.. Call out the troll as a group! I guess that is why I love you all! Bravo and keep up the good work bloggers.. You all have everyone's back. hugsssssssss V

Another important thing to do is to manage your own blog. Not only moderate a discussion but also keep an eye on visitors.

It pays to check new visitors and see if a troll is on their friend's list. In cases like that I have them instantly blocked. Same goes for profiles that turned off and for newly created bare profiles.

Trolls love to have multiple profiles that say nothing about them, and they frequently turn their profiles off. If a person doesn't want me to know anything about them, I don't want them in my home, which in this case, my blog.

My friend did some snooping. She went through all his posts for today and yesterday. There are only 1-3 comments per post, and not all of his posts have comments. LadyLeo (that's half of her handle) shares his religious views and comments kindly almost on every post. Demonicsexkitten also made a kind comment or two. Kittyliquor also made kind comment or two.

It doesn't look like any fighting is going on there. Unless the fight is in someone else's blog.

Another important bit of wisdom for one of the guides. I trust the party secretary is taking notes?

And by party secretary, I mean someone who is likely to have his/her thong underwear hanging from the chandelier while transcribing out the meeting minutes.

Seriously, good stuff here. Can we get posts going into which people can contribute ideas which will then be turned into cohesive documents?
