MEMORIAL DAY --MAY 30, 2016

MEMORIAL DAY--MAY 30,2016

When I was a , the Second World War was still a vivid memory in EVERYONE'S memory banks. In fact, I was born before WWII even started... Almost every family I knew lost a , a father, a cousin, or someone in Europe or in the South Pacific.

By LOST, I mean KILLED. Many more young men were so badly injured they never were able to return completely healed to civilian life. At least 18 million people were killed in that fire storm of man's savagery to his fellow man.

The Military Draft was a rigidly enforced law where all boys who turned 18 HAD to register for the draft. Each year some of those same boys were selected to be placed in military service for two years. It made no difference whether the boys WANTED to go or not. They either went in the military, or they RAN.... Some of them ran to Canada or to South American countries. If the boys who ran were caught by the authorities, they ended up in jail.

This was the law of the United States while I was growing up. It was a harsh law, and yet I think it was a fair law, and this law, along with the enforced military service made young asshole boys gain respect for this country, our TRIBE, our culture.

At that time, from the beginning of WWII at the beginning of the 1940's, to the killing of John F. Kennedy in November,1963, the United States was a first class country. The assassination of Kennedy and then of Robert Kennedy a few years later, marked the turning of our first class nation toward governmental failed policies that have led us where we are in 2016. The ending of the draft in the 1970's was one of those policies that I believe was a huge mistake. An all volunteer, highly paid military, has proven to be a big mistake in other countries, and may prove to have severe consequences for the U.S. too.

Donald Trump states flatly that we've become a 3rd World country. Although I probably won't vote for Trump in the coming Presidential election. (I reserve the right to keep those options open). I do agree with Trump about the U.S. becoming a 3rd World country in recent years.

I voted in the Primary election, yesterday by absentee ballot, and drove the 25 mile round trip to the nearest mail drop box in order to mail my ballot.

I was in the U.S. Army Infantry (the 1st Battle Group, 18th Infantry}. I was stationed in Mannheim, Germany with the 7th Army in the late 1950's... I enlisted in the Army because of the draft... By enlisting, I was able to CHOOSE what army unit I wanted to be in. I enlisted for three years as a Regular Army enlistee. When I was discharged at Fort Devens, Mass. I was assigned to 8 more years in the Ready Reserve.

So, as an Army Vet., I salute the men and women who gave their lives for this country and for you and me.

We have many, many problems in this country that desperately need fixing. Still, I would never have any desire to live anywhere else. I stand at attention, and salute the U.S.A.-- the land of the free, and the home of the brave.

We're in total agreement on this H.C. .. M. too, was in the service...A Marine! The draft enabled the military to be a mixed bag of people, a microcosm just like our country is. Now, I think the military could become one of our greatest dangers for Democracy.
I so much enjoy your comments.. david

Thans Bob's Here........ I got much more from my service than I gave.. I was in Europe for two years, and made Training Sgt. where I could write my own passes. In those days only a few years after the devastation of the war, the American dollar was king and a soldier could buy amazing things with a buck. The training was also superb and taught me how to survive under harsh conditions. I doubt I would have been successful living on the desert in my first years out here when I had no electricity, no water, no neighbors, and my cabin was little more that a plywood shack with a hole in the tarpaper roof. I hope your holiday was a great one.. dave

Thanks, Boris! I write these posts early in the morning with I first get up and before I take my dogs --and myself-- on a nice pre-sunrise walk on the open desert... Sometimes I get a little carried away at my keyboard..

They're, their, there ! Ain't English great? No wonder so many new people in Southern California NEVER learn to speak (or write) properly.... dave.
