WILLPOWER

If I-- or M.-- buys a package of Oscar M. hot dogs and brings them home, and I take one bite of one of those cooked (preferably steamed), dogs, I end up eating the entire package.

Why is this???

It's because the industrialized food companies have labs where they carefully make as many of their foods as possible-- addictive. The taste and ingredients have been purposefully prepared and tested to create a biological need in most humans to eat more, and more-- and more. This is a form of the ruthless capitalism that has evolved over the past 50 years. The more I and other people eat of their product, the more their company sells, and the more money they make.

The goal of every company is to make money. To accumulate black ink on the bottom line.

Because this is the name of the Capitalism game, companies that are good at playing that game haven't done anything illegal or wrong. Except, perhaps, in the consciences of their governing board members.

Just because I can't resist eating all the hotdogs in a package, and then take my baseball bat and go down to the nearest neighbor and grab his dogs too, doesn't place any responsibility for the Oscar M. company to cease and desist in making their dogs taste so wonderful to me that I can't resist them.

It's my problem, not theirs.

I had a problem driving my Ford Crown Victoria Ltd, all power, fuel injected V-8, with a 302 cubic inch engine many years ago when it was practically new. It held the road so well, and was so fast that I had trouble keeping my foot off the accelerator and hitting over 100 on the country roads around my place... I finally had to park the car in my garage and resist driving it...Again, in a similar way of looking at things, this was not the fault of the car. It was my fault.

The ability to control ourselves, to develop the power of our wills to resist these impulses that all humans have, is a sign I believe, of maturity.

Do you have will power? Are you mature? Or are there some things in your life that you simply can't resist, no matter how hard you try to?

I've read that men usually don't develop their control of impulses until they're in their forties... M. hasn't much problem with eating too much food that's bad for her.
