DESERT TORTOISES EATING A SNACK
DESERT TORTOISES EATING A SNACK These beautiful, gentle, and very smart little tortoises, were born in my enclosed garden spot...They're now six years old, and may live to be over 100. They're much too tame to ever be set free to roam the desert. When I first moved to the Mojave in 1976 many of these tortoises roamed over the almost pristine desert here. Now most of them are gone---killed by the extreme drought the Mojave has suffered through for the past 15 years. |

Well are you going to let us in on their names??? The names aren't very original, and really I think of them all as the Big Surprise, because I had taken their mother and father to the Joshua Tortoise Rescue compound about 5 years ago, and a few months later, these little guys hatched from eggs buried underground. Originally 7 tiny tortoises hatched out, but something was wrong with one of them and it died within a few days of hatching out.. When they were first hatched, they were only the size of walnuts... These six seem to be very happy, and healthy. Thanks for asking, Silky, david

This seems to be a healthy environment for humans to live into old age, and I expect to live quite a while longer. But...you're very compassionate to worry about this sort of thing... Marisol is 18 years younger than I am, and we also have many friends in this area. Meanwhile the 29 Palms Marine Corp base--the largest Marine Corp. base in the world---has created a compound for all the wild desert tortoises they've come across, because due to extreme climate change in this area, they've determined that the few remaining wild tortoises in this area will soon become extinct. There's no growing food for them to eat, and even they require some water every few months. My tortoises eat cabbage, corn on the cob, kale, collards, broccoli, and other vegetables I buy for them from the grocery store. They would starve on the open desert, and coyotes and Ravens would probably kill them the first few days they were in the open. My little guys almost never even go in their shells. They sleep with their little feet and heads stretched out in the open... There's another tortoise rescue place in Joshua Tree. But I've been there to look it over, and I don't trust the people who run it. I have a suspicion they're selling some of the wild tortoises to people. It's sweet of you to be concerned with the little guys, Cathy. Believe me, I am too. and have planned quite thoroughly for them. It would be great if this area suddenly turned back into the desert it was when I first moved here in 1976 when during the summers we would have small showers and rain almost every day.. At that time the desert was green and there were a lot of plants for the wild animals to eat... Again, thanks for being concerned, love, david
