THE BADLANDS

THE BADLANDS

This is the time of year in the Mojave Desert badlands when moisture from central Mexico tries to reach up into this parched part of Southern California, and bring in just enough rain to keep the area from becoming only sand dunes.

This is our monsoon season. It officially begins July 15th and runs through the middle of September.

Today started with a heavily overcast sky and occasional drops of water falling, but nothing one could call rain.

I left my little border collie sleeping inside the house under the "dry" mode on the AC, and decided to walk to a neighbor's house about 2 miles to the South of my place. The collie wanted to go with me, but I told her it was too hot for her outside. The temperature was about 90 and the humidity must have been very close to 100 percent. The sun was shielded by the heavy overcast and for an old desert hermit like me it was a sweet walk to Rick's home two miles away...

I've known Rick for over 25 years. He's now 86 and lives by himself. Rick lives in the home he and his wife built in 1980 on 15 acres of land his wife's family owned. Rick's wife passed away about ten years ago. Her name was Cory, and she became disoriented and her condition turned to dementia. Cory had to be hospitalized, and she died about a year later.

Rick was happy to see me, and handed me a bottle of water. There was a fifth of Vodka sitting on Rick's kitchen counter, but I didn't mention it. I've always known he puts away booze in the afternoon. But he was alert and sober as we sat and talked, and his drinking wasn't any of my business.

I was glad to see that he was wearing a Medic Alert tag. One of those kind that's used to alert a response team when the button is pushed.

After I saw Rick was alright, I headed back home. It was hot and humid, but very peaceful and totally quiet as I took my time hiking the two miles back home.

The collie wagged her tail lazily as I unlocked the door and came into the cool interior of my desert home.

    HI

hOW LONG DOES IT TAKE YOU TO WALK THE 2 MILES???

It's summer and I have not heard you talk much of Marisol. she usually is with you at this time of year.

    yes I know I'm nosey!
M. is with me, but she begs me not to write about her.. She's afraid someone on her job will read something and give her a bad time.. That happened just before she retired while working on the base five years ago...(fortunately she was in L.A. when the cops broke in on me!).

I don't wear a watch, but I suspect about an hour.. I take my time walking through the desert because I go cross country and keep my eyes peeled for snakes and gopher holes..I've always been a walker and my legs still are strong.. xoxo david

Yes there are quite a few riders around this area, and even a few horse ranches... I've always enjoyed riders coming around my place, where I dislike the dirt bikes and dune buggies that create dust and make a racket.

The old shows like GUNSMOKE and THE RIFLEMAN were sometimes filmed in this area. xoxodavid
