THE GATE KEY

THE GATE KEY

THE GATE KEY

When I die, and I'll probably drift off into a sand bank of oblivion long before Marisol, this place will automatically go to Marisol.

Last year I gave Marisol a quitclaim deed listing us both as joint tenants.

This means when I die there isn't any paperwork needed for the property to automatically be Marisols.

Today, when the Citizen's Patrol stopped at our gate to visit with Katy, the Border Collie we'd inherited from Don and his wife, when Don died last month, one of the middle aged fellows said, "Jesus, it looks like Don's house was sacked by a troop of Marines."

Marisol and I were transferring water into a 700 gallon stainless steel tank sitting high on a Marine Corps trailer, when the large SUV stopped outside our gate.

I walked over to the gate. I was only wearing a loose pair of grey shorts and a white T-shirt.

"I'm sorry I don't have the keys on me to open this and let you men in," I said.

"That's Okay, " the tall man told me on the other side of the fence. His eyes were watching Marisol.

Marisol came up to the fence. "Hi, Ted, " she said. "How have you been?"

Ted said, "Marisol, we all wondered where you'd been keeping yourself after you resigned from your job on the base last summer."

Marisol grabbed my arm and said, "I live here now, Ted. "

Ted was dying of curiosity. "Is, uhh Roger living here too?"

"No, Roger still lives in our old house in town, the two of us split some time ago..... We're still friends, though, and I check up on him and the girl who's taking care of him, about once a week."

I think Ted was a little embarrassed. Katy had come up to the fence gate and stuck her nose through, and Ted gave her a small bisquit he'd been holding in his hand.

Katy took the bisquit and carried it back to where Stretch Limousine was standing, while silently eyeing the man on the other side of "her" gate.

Ted watched Katy drop the bisquit at Stretch's feet.

Stretch bent down and took the bisquit and carried it back to our house and her favorite place on the enclosed patio out of the sun.

Ted said to Katy, "It looks like you've got yourself a friend and companion with that Dingo, little girl, and a good new home too," and Ted smiled at me.

Ted's eyes were all over Marisol and her white halter and shorts. We talked a little about the death of Don, and the fast exit of his wife Mary back to Texas where Mary is now living with a sister.

Within a day after Don's death, his house was filled with relatives and friends, carting off everything they could haul away.

Mary told me before she left for Texas, that the house here, had a reverse mortgage on it, and Mary was just leaving it. The mortgage company could do what they wanted with it.

Surrealistic things happen on the desert.

I imagine Ted probably figures Marisol living with me, is just another one of those very weird things.

The white SUV drove slowly up the hill away from our place. I played with the gate key in my pocket, and Katy barked a little at the departing vehicle.

Marisol reached up, looked at me knowingly, gently tugged on the hair on my chin, and patted my pocket where the gate key was stashed with her other hand.

We both went back to silently filling the large stainless steel tank with water, and when I glanced up at Marisol, she blew me a kiss.

No, not legally Maddy. It was getting too complicated with all the legal things involved.. Besides, M. has a lot more money than me, and I didn't want anyone to think I was after her loot.. xxxx david

Thank you Layla. I'm glad M. wasn't in one of her naked moods when they drove by. Poor Ted would have had a heart attack! LOL. xxxx david

Somehow THAT looks sexy and familiar. But I'll have to call out "Mayday!" to get help in figuring out exactly WHAT it is... xxxx david

Citizen's Patrol is a group of middle-aged men who have a little training by the Sheriff's Dept., wear uniforms, and drive 4-wheel SUV's that are decked out to look like official Sheriff's Cars. They carry communication equipment, but no guns.

I was asked to join, a number of years ago, but I really have too much to do around this place to volunteer a lot of hours away from here. Also, I'm not a joiner of anything!

The Patrol has deteriorated into being a "check on your property" for hire group mostly. If you pay the organization a monthly stipend, they'll come by your property and check it out.

You're so right about the sand offering a lot of security, Layla. Only 4-wheel drive vehicles and other off-road vehicles are safe from getting stuck.

The sand also leaves tracks. When I take the dogs for long walks in the morning and night outside our fence, I'm always looking for footprints, or tracks of all kinds in the sand.

A few times in recent years, black bears and mountain lions have come through, and when I notice those very large tracks, I carry a .38 with me on our morning rounds... Thank you for your inquiring mind! xxxx david

We only have one gate in and out of the property, and it's a solid iron one, set in concrete.. We've found it's a good idea to always keep it locked. The gate is a couple of hundred feet from the house so it's a good excuse not to let people in that we're really not interested in having inside.

Marisol has her own set of keys to the gate and the house, but I don't know if she had her gate key on her this morning or not. Probably not.

Once or twice in our lives, we meet another person who we can "read" and who's able to do the same with us. Sometimes M. and I are silent, and yet our minds are exchanging all kinds of signals back and forth. M. has a shyness to her that some other people use to push her around. I do protect her from that. I can be pretty rude at times, and I'm not shy at all.

I'm glad you can stand up for yourself, D. This world seems to be getting more and more brazen all the time. xxxx David
