I am Just SO Over It

Disclaimer: The proceding is a rant. Step away from my blog now if you were expecting a flowery, feel-good blog.

And by OVER it, I mean with my leg injury that I discussed previously. So, my primary care doctor examined my leg last week and diagnosed me with a muscle strain in my hamstring. Cue a physical therapist referral. Tuesday was my initial physical therapy appointment. The physical therapist pushed and prodded a metallic instrument all along my hamstring and my IT band and prescribed daily foam rolling. He sent me home with the area kinesio taped and encouraged me to continue my elliptical and yoga workouts as long as I wasn't experiencing pain.

I was encouraged by his report that he could get me back to running in the next two weeks. I kept up my elliptical workouts which by definition were grueling 65 minute sweat sessions that I needed to help elicit the benefits of the runners high I received from previous short 5 mile runs. No pain except minor pain navigating stairs. So far, so good.

Today life threw me another fucking curveball. This morning, as I headed into the kitchen to pour a cup of coffee, my left leg locked up behind my knee and buckled. It was all I could do to keep from falling down. It didn't hurt, it was just a nuisance and it unlocked just as quickly.

The big kick in the teeth occured later this morning as I attempted an elliptical workout at the gym. I got on my usual elliptical but could sense the machine wasn't gliding smoothly. It felt like it was grinding only after a couple of passes so I stopped to get off so I could try out another machine. As I stepped off with my injured left foot, I went to pivot when I heard a loud "CRACK". Immediately felt sharp stabbing pain and let out an uncontrollable wincing sound.

Putting pressure on my leg was damn near impossible without extreme pain so I hobbled back to the locker room. I had a follow up physical therapy appointment an hour and a half later so I decided I would have him assess the injury.

As soon as I entered my vehicle, the reality of it hit me hard. I broke down and just started sobbing uncontrollably. I couldn't contain the raw emotion I felt flooding me. I had been so optimistic and hopeful that I had done all the right things to heal my leg only to have another fucking setback and something seriously painful at that!

The PT assessed the injury and determined that I probably tore my meniscus. He referred me back to my PCP for a MRI. Before he sent me home, he slapped electrodes on my leg and did STEM therapy on the area which is meant to help displace the pain so it is not felt so intensely.

My PCP's office never returned my call this afternoon so I get to spend the weekend in pain with limited mobility. Anyone who knows me at all knows I am not the type who can lay around. This should be fun. NOT.

I guess you'll have to find a way to stay active with your leg in the air. I have a few ideas

A meniscus tear is not a fun thing to deal with. You need to take it serious. Walking on it when it is hurting is going to do more damage. Doing more damage means it may not heal well if at all. Pain killers only mask the damage being done. I know from personal experience. I tore the meniscus in my left knee in 1987. I decided against any of the surgeries available at the time as the tear healed somewhat and the options weren't good. But my knee is very prone to re-injury if I do things that aggravate the situation. When I do re-injure it I stay off of it for as long as it takes to stop hurting (the intense pain anyway). If I don't then it just gets worse and ultimately takes longer to heal.

I would suggest you look up info on meniscus injuries on the internet so you have some idea what you could be in for. If it is a bad tear you options don't look good as a runner. There are more options than there were in 87 but they are not all good for runners.

Remember that pain is telling you to stay off or at least don't be bending your knee. Don't mask or ignore the pain and walk on it anyway. A knee brace and crutches may be a good idea. I ignored the pain for to long before I went to the doctor.

A few responses come to mind. All of them meant for humor!
[brDark: ]Let's just be glad you're not a horse. They shoot horses with a bad leg.

Grammar dick: If this was a preceding rant, it would have been before the disclaimer. You meant 'the following'.

Other: No pain, no gain? What's your gain?

It sucks getting old, doesn’t it? But seriously, all that crap is interconnected, so when something happens one place, the other spots feel it too. Best wishes for a speedy recovery, but ole Doc Cleavage is thinking some time away from hardcore exercising might be in order. I know you don’t want to hear that.

I RE-proved the other day that my left knee just cannot handle the treadmill. After exclusively using the ellipticals for cardio for the past few months, I thought I could tolerate JUST ONE visit to the treadmills (which overlook the ladies in the water aerobics class in the pool below, offering a fun angle on things ). And I was fine too - until the following night. At the intermission for “Chicago” I got up and my knee was totally locked, though with a bit of effort it freed up. Same thing at the end of the play, and pretty much every time I sit for very long now. Do you think they’ll rearrange the cardio machines for me?

Sorry that you're in pain.
I want to return to hydro-therapy exercise classes but can't because of an operation scar on my spine keeps breaking down.
