Recurring Dreams Friend or Foe?

If you have ever had a dream that kept coming back you were experiencing what is known as a recurring dream. This experience is actually fairly common. These dreams are communications from the inner self to the outer self as is the case with all dreams. What makes these unique is that the same events, the same theme or even a series of episodes that occur much like a soap opera, are experienced by the dreamer.

I've experienced this phenomenon fairly often including last night.

Last night I dreamed about HIM. HE is the ex married professor. The dream is usually the same every time: being out in public and bumping into him and his wife at a social event but it's never awkward; more like we are all casual aquaintances.

Other recurring dreams I've had include:

Going back to school and forgetting my locker combination and being late for an important test.

Returning to work part time as a police officer but only on the night shift when all of the serious things go down and forgetting an important piece of equipment (my bullet proof vest; my gun) or having my radio turned down and missing an important call-out.

Finally, some aspect of malfunction with my house (leaking roof, etc)

Yes, these themes appear to be anxiety driven but having recurring dreams are actually healthy and they are the mind's way of working through a problem to seek resolution.

Have you ever experienced the phenomenon of a recurring dream? If so, do your dreams seem to have a common theme?

By understanding our dreams we may gain a valuable insight for self discovery and growth. It is only by applying what has been learned from the dreams that a healthy resolution can be achieved.

I'll refrain from going in to the details of the dreams mentioned in my comment below.

About the only dreams I can recall that have recurring themes are about the house in which I currently live being sucked up in a giant sink hole. I've had that one NUMEROUS times. Yeah sure, the ground around here is not really prone to sinkholes (not like when I live in Florida), but I guess it reflects my knowledge that, while nice cosmetically, this place is not very well built. Or perhaps it is a statement on my marriage.

I've had them, and am having them. lol As for current themes... confrontation, the forgetting of something important, and redemption.

I have had many similar types of dreams...job related......school related, family things.....strange stuff. Sometimes they are current situations which I think I need to react to but when I wake up I realize its not real....

I dream of my junior high school ALL THE TIME. The locker combo thing? Most often. Walk into a classroom and it is the wrong one. All folks look at you.

Lately, I have been having this recurring dream involving a sky FULL of aircraft. They're standing still... just hovering. Weird.

And sometimes I dream of my bedroom when I was a kid. It was a great room!

Taken from the dream dictionary: To see an airplane in your dream indicates that you will overcome your obstacles and rise to a new level of prominence and status. You may experience a higher consciousness, new-found freedom and greater awareness. Perhaps you need to gain a better perspective or wider view on something. If the airplane is taking off, then it suggests that an idea or plan is about to "take off" and be put into action. It may also represent your need to get away and escape from your daily life. Dreaming that the airplane sits on the runway and never takes off refers to a real life project or idea that has failed to get off the ground. You are having difficulties getting started on a project.

When I was a kid, I used to have a recurring dream about going to school in my pajamas. It stopped when there was a pajama day during spirit week. Never had the dream again.

Hi Hon,
"...appear to be anxiety driven but..."
seems to me that you are being driven to distraction rather than anxiety driven...

dreams of 'him' and thoughts of 'her'

perhaps your dreams are driven by your libido working overtime

I used to be able to manage stress alot better . but have had anxiety driven dreams.
I try showering before going to bed. That help lower the anxiety and stress for me.

They are NOT airplanes.
