Are internet dating services just another waste of time?

I'm starting to believe the various dating sites are just another waste of my time. I've had very little luck in the past 4 months that I've been using some of the larger sites and I'm ready to throw in the towel all together.

I've sent the winks; written witty, well thought out emails and kept my profile updated with recent photos and honest descriptive text.

So far, I've had 1 connection that resulted in a date and that has reached a dead end. Things were going really well, but after we had our first date, I'm apparently not good enough to return a phone call to. (The date went well, I guess we are probably just not compatible and have no chemisty or something.)

No big deal, time to move on.

I am however, starting to question the money I'm spending every month on that service and will probably cancel it if things don't start to change soon. Don't get me wrong, I'm a patient person, but my time and money are limited, and this just seems like a waste to me.

So my question is, has anyone had any luck with any online dating services?

So far I've been looking for someone to settle down with, but I'd even be open for just a fling or something.

Anything. Just to let me know I'm not completely un-attractive to the opposite sex.
