I don't really pay attention to the news - I feel its all overblown one way the other - so I didn't really pay attention to the 'miracle on the Hudson' when it happened but I got to wondering the other day if there were any jaded businessmen on that flight that immediately got on another plane to get to a meeting . I just imagine him on the wing of the plane on his mobile "yeah push the meeting back an hour the god damn plane crashed" . And so I started reading about it a little bit and watching some of the footage and it's pretty amazing . Nothing like talking about something 8 years after it happens . Another thing I wonder is if I had been there would I have hung out on the wing or tried to swim for it ? It was 19 damn degrees that day . And I know the pilot is supposed to be calm and collected but even given that listening to him talk to the radio tower is insane to me because he is totally calm . The air traffic dude is telling him what runaway to land on and he matter-of-factly replies "Unable . . . we're going in the Hudson" . Even for a pilot that dude had balls of steel if you ask me . Right after that you can hear the air traffic dudes talking and the one guy is all like "What did he say" and the other one says "I think he said they're going in the Hudson" . Because I'm a cavemen who doesn't think about technology I didn't realize how much footage there is of this actually going down . I was also impressed by how quickly the boats showed up to start getting people out of there . Maybe there was some time lapse in the footage I saw but if not like 10 minutes after the plane is in the water there's a ferry there taking people off the wing . I'm a pretty negative person and it's easy for me to believe that everyone is a moron and can't do anything - so it's good for me to learn about something like this where everyone involved was on the ball . Even the passengers , aside from the one dude who panicked and opened the wrong door but you can't really blame him . But because it's me there's one thing that drives me insane about it and that's that a lot of people said that they would fly again because "what are the odds that I'll be in two plane crashes ?" Which is of course the gambler's fallacy . I spend 80% of my time at work trying to explain basic statistics to people and it never works .
