For all Privacy Concious out there

Do you have a wireless router at your home, planning to jump on the bandwagon and purchase one soon ? Yes... keep reading.

It is that time of the year where you can't avoid the inevitable, yup taxes. So I was in my basement working on taxes when time to go to work came, I put my laptop in standby, packed and headed out. When I came to work, I fired the laptop to do my daily blogging. Sure enough, I get my internet connected signal, but something weird happens, my documents folder which became unavailable after I disconnected from my home network becomes available. With a minor difference, non of the documents are mine !!!

Happens that someone living close by installed a new network, and my laptop decided to pick up its signal instead of the work signal which comes weaker. And My Documents folder refreshed showing me this new neighbor's files.

Just for curiosity sake, had a look see what they had, damn no porn or kinky pictures but seems like we use the same tax software, where all your bank numbers, SS #, financial info is stored. HOLY F'ing shit... I can just open this file and get all his info, order myself some nice toys from his credit cards and transfer some cash from his bank to mine in the Cayman's !!!

Nope being the good neighbor I am, I created a new text file, told him what had happened, and suggested he uses some password scheme to prevent further instances happening with my contact info.

Next blog, I am writing about how to secure your home network... STAY TUNED !!!

I have a wireless network going here, but I decided not to password it so that travelers could have access as they were going by (sort of like leaving the porch light on). Maybe it's time to rethink my "power to the people" attitude...

Elevate me...

Also, I am firewalled out the whazoo....
Do you think I need to worry?

A WEP encrypted signal is just like locking your door, it gets you a relative amount of security, but locks can be picked, passwords cracked.

My BF set mine up, all encrypted and everything. He set it up to where only my other PC and his laptop are able to recieve my signal and that is the only one we use. Don't know how it's done, but greatful to him for doing it for me. Plus we only share internet connection no shared files and folders and the like.

Never, under any circumstances, take a sleeping pill and a laxative on the same night.
