Heavy Hearted Sore Puss

I decided to go check on the horses after I dropped Lil Bit off to her daddy. Since it was a gorgeous fall day I figured I'd take Sadie for a ride. I rode her bareback up to the barn but since she was being jumpy figured I'd better get her under saddle. I got her saddled up and we did some basic ground work walking her around. I got on and off of her a few times as she continued to be difficult. She hasn't been ridden other than a short bareback ride since last August not that this is really an excuse. She's gone for that long without being ridden before and behaved fine but not yesterday. She decided she wasn't having me riding and after three tries finally got her spins going fast enough to get me off. Yep, I got thrown for the 1st time in 11 years. Anyone who rides knows if you ride long enough you will get thrown. It is never fun. I didn't get hurt other than a couple bruises and scrapes. I'm sure I'll be stiff and sore for a few days but nothing major. My tuck & roll skills are still in good shape but I'd rather not have to use them. I have promised my Viking I will not attempt to ride alone anymore. Technically I wasn't alone. The land owner was home. I don't want him having a coronary worrying about me so I'll stay on the ground.

That adventure on top of Roanie's health problems prompted me to write the following:

Dear friend,

I’m writing to you for your advice with a very heavy heart. After many years of owning my 2 mares I’m considering re-homing them. Bear with me while I explain the situation. This isn’t a financial decision. I can afford to keep them as they are and even have someone to take care of them while we are gone. The horses are and have been for the last 3 years pasture boarded on about 30 acres of an 80 acre hay farm. The farm owner grows and sells hay and feeds round bales of his hay to the girls in the winter. He and his family live on the front 40 plus acres and keep an eye on the horses but don’t interact with them other than to pet them occasionally. The hay is included in the pasture board fee. They have access to a creek that runs through the middle of the property and a 100 gallon water trough at the front access to the area of the property. They are not fed any feed other than when I visit to get them to the gate to groom and handle them. Neither of them has ever lived in a barn. They have always been pastured on 15-30 acres sometimes with an open type shelter sometimes without.

The problem is that I don’t get out there very often other than to check on them, groom them or have their hooves trimmed. They are over 15 minutes away. We are about to move to Italy for 2 years. Our move was supposed to be in May/June of next year but maybe as soon as Jan/Feb. I have a reliable pet sitter who has agreed to take over my bi-weekly visits while we are gone.

I’m questioning whether that is the best thing for the girls or not. Sadie is a copper bay 20 year old half Arab/QH. I’ve owned her since 1/27/98. She has been my best trail riding for 14 years. Up until recently I would have described her as a high spirited but level headed . The girl I bought her from had used her to barrel race and roping but was selling her because she wouldn’t jump. She can turn on a dime. She needs to retrained and ridden regularly to stay at a healthy weight and attitude. She has always been a very easy keeper and overweight.

Roanie will be 9 years old in a couple of weeks. She was born in my dad’s back yard. Her dad is my 1st TWH stud. My dad wanted Sadie’s foal, Copper so we traded. Roanie has been with Sadie since she was 6 months old. Roanie is a beautiful gray half TWH/Arab. She’s really a red roan but has gotten whiter as she’s grown up. She thinks she is one of the Great Danes and is the most affection seeking I have ever known. I had her started under saddle but haven’t been able to complete her training since my spinal fusion 3 years ago. She was very willing under saddle. She has also always been an easy keeper. Unfortunately in the last 6-9 months she has put on a lot of extra weight and started showing signs of laminitis. I have not found a grazing muzzle that she wasn’t able to get off and with them being loose on 30 acres of pasture that is the only control I have over her food intake.

Ideally they would be somewhere that their weight could be controlled and have more training and interaction. As I said before this isn’t a financial issue, I’d be happy to keep paying as I am for their upkeep if I could get them once we are back in the states and have property for them to be with me. I understand that may not be feasible. With the economy the way it is I know finding good homes for horses is extremely hard and they may just have to stay in the current situation. As a fellow lover I’m asking for your advice as to what I should do and what is in the girls’ best interest. Many of you have much more current and broader connections to the community. I’d really appreciate your input and any help you can give. Thank you for taking the time to read this. Take care.

I'm off to a live band and costume contest at a local watering hole. I didn't go karoake as planned last night because I was already sore. I'll have pics of the costume soon. Hope you pervs are having a great weekend. Take care and love each other well.

Kisses,
LA

Horses are fun and dangerous. Many people have died because of horse accidents and many more hurt. I'm glad you are ok! You're too beautiful to be hurt. I don't know what blog I would read if yours wasn't here. Be safe.

Glad to hear you are okay from your fall LA. I would think being thrown from a horse could be a very dangerous thing. My youngest sister's friend was thrown from a horse and broke her neck... she was dead on the spot.
