Never over the Hill
Beloved civil rights leader Oliver W Hill has passed at the nice even age of 100. He was involved in a series of litigations that culminated in the Brown vs Board of Education decision. His service in enlightening the eyes of our understanding has changed our society for the better. Inspite of early victories on behalf of civil rights there is a frightening trend at hand. The new conservative Supreme Court has started to review and reverse long standing precedent with little shame. I don't care if its a Womans rights, a Black mans, a Queer, or a love starved a Senior Sizzle Addict. If one of us is not free then we are all at risk. There has been a lot of political momentum towards state subsidy of private schools. This would be a disaster that would not only undermine Brown vs BE, it would also pave the way to a class society. On the one hand subsidies work for parochial schools, this promotes religious freedom, on the other hand it rewards segregation. School integration has served to give us all a more open and free society. |
