Dead Poet Society and a Tribute to Robin Williams

Dead Poet Society and a Tribute to Robin Williams

John Keating: We don't read and write poetry because it's cute. We read and write poetry because we are members of the human race. And the human race is filled with passion. And medicine, law, business, engineering, these are noble pursuits and necessary to sustain life. But poetry, beauty, romance, love, these are what we stay alive for. To quote from Whitman, "O me! O life!... of the questions of these recurring; of the endless trains of the faithless... of cities filled with the foolish; what good amid these, O me, O life?" Answer. That you are here - that life exists, and identity; that the powerful play goes on and you may contribute a verse. That the powerful play *goes on* and you may contribute a verse. What will your verse be?

Robin Williams played the character, John Keating, in the Dead poet Society. It is one of my favorite movies he did. The above quote is from the movie. Robin lived his life. He embraced poetry (in the form of his wit and comedy), beauty, romance and love! His verse will continue to live on with all he films and shows he did. Here is another quote from the movie:

John Keating: They're not that different from you, are they? Same haircuts. Full of hormones, just like you. Invincible, just like you feel. The world is their oyster. They believe they're destined for great things, just like many of you, their eyes are full of hope, just like you. Did they wait until it was too late to make from their lives even one iota of what they were capable? Because, you see gentlemen, these boys are now fertilizing daffodils. But if you listen real close, you can hear them whisper their legacy to you. Go on, lean in. Listen, you hear it? - - Carpe - - hear it? - - Carpe, carpe diem, seize the day boys, make your lives extraordinary.

Carpe Diem, seize the day! Robin sure lived! He embraced his life. Yes he had ups and downs. His fight with drugs and alcohol was widely publicized. He did not hide from it- he was very candid about his demons. He kept his depression at bay for a long time, but recently it came back with vengeance thus he fell off the wagon. He went to treatment last month. I will miss him. We all will miss him. Good bye Robin…O Captain My Captain, you are on the long road to infinity!

Here is the poem from Walt Whitman...a tribute to Abraham Lincoln, but for tonight...I will tribute it to Robin Williams!

O Captain My Captain – Walt Whitman

O Captain! my Captain! our fearful trip is done,
The ship has weather’d every rack, the prize we sought is won,
The port is near, the bells I hear, the people all exulting,
While follow eyes the steady keel, the vessel grim and daring;
But O heart! heart! heart!
O the bleeding drops of red,
Where on the deck the Captain lies,
Fallen cold and dead.

O Captain! my Captain! rise up and hear the bells;
Rise up — for you the flag is flung — for you the bugle trills,
For you the bouquets and ribbon’d wreaths — for you the shores a-crowding,
For you they call, the swaying mass, their eager faces turning,
Here Captain! dear father!
The arm beneath your head!
It is some dream that on the deck,
You’ve fallen cold and dead.

My Captain does not answer, his lips are pale and still,
My father does not feel my arm, he has no pulse nor will,
The ship is anchor’d safe and sound, its voyage closed and done,
From fearful trip the victor ship comes in with object won;
Exult O shores, and ring O bells!
But I with mournful tread,
Walk the deck my Captain lies,
Fallen cold and dead.
